PARADISE FISHING LODGE, FEBRUARY FISH REPORT

The Last couple weeks has been good.  We did start to get a few nice tuna, but there still not here in full forcé.  The marlín bite was great for a couple weeks, but that slowed down a bit over the last week.  we have had very good luck around the islands and have caught plenty of big roosters and snapper along with many other types of fish.

I have made a bit of progress on expanding my marina,  my permission finally came out for me to build a gas station.  I hope to start building in the next month.  We will be selling Gas to Boats from the end of our dock and also cars and trucks that pass on the road.

Hope to see you here this year for the Best and the Biggest Fishing in Panama and all of Central America.

Live web-Cam of the Panama Canal

The history of the Panama Canal goes back to 16th century. After realizing the riches of Peru, Ecuador, and Asia, and counting the time it took the gold to reach the ports of Spain, it was suggested c.1524 to Charles V, that by cutting out a piece of land somewhere in Panama, the trips would be made shorter and the risk of taking the treasures through the isthmus would justify such an enterprise. A survey of the isthmus was ordered and subsequently a working plan for a canal was drawn up in 1529. The wars in Europe and the thirsts for the control of kingdoms in the Mediterranean Sea simply put the project on permanent hold.

What Has Rand Paul Ever Done???

The GOP’s Amateur Hour With Rand Paul and Ted Cruz

By Richard Cohen, and News of the World by Panama Jack

Published: April 14, 2014 10:22 A.M.

Not to put too fine a point on it, but what has Rand Paul ever done? Oh, sure, he’s a member of the U.S. Senate, but only a freshman, and it’s the only political office he has held. He’s an ophthalmologist, a father, a husband and the son of Ron Paul, who used to run for president. So now it is son Rand who is doing so. Aside from family tradition, the question is why?

Rand Paul and Ted Cruz Voted Ass Holes of the Year, by Americans

Rand Paul and Ted Cruz Voted Ass Holes of the Year, by Americans

Last month, Paul won the Conservative Political Action Conference straw poll with 31 percent of the vote. Second in the hearts of conservatives that day was Sen. Ted Cruz, yet another right-wing darling whose record is unblemished by significant achievement. He, too, is a Senate freshman and by virtue of inexperience feels he knows so much more than his colleagues.

How Many Ass Holes Do You See In This Picture, I See 3

How Many Ass Holes Do You See In This Picture, I See Three

At the moment Paul has the momentum. He just appeared at the Freedom Summit in Manchester, N.H., where, according to The Post, he generated the most excitement. Cruz also attended the event, as did Mike Huckabee (back from the politically dead), Donald Trump, running or not running for the umpteenth time, and Rep. Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, who may or may not be seeking the White House.

Mike Huckabee and Rand Paul Government by Morons

Mike Huckabee and Rand Paul Government by Morons

Either way, the result will be the same. All this might seem something of a joke. Blackburn is probably not a household name on her own block. Huckabee has failed before and will undoubtedly fail again. Trump would probably prefer to run for president than actually be one. But it is Paul who commands attention. A fair number of Republicans are drawn to his putative candidacy on the basis, it seems, of what he opposes — big government, the Federal Reserve, foreign aid, federal education programs and, of course, abortion — more than anything he has done.

If you compare Paul to Republican presidential nominees of yesteryear, you can get an idea of just how far the GOP has sunk. Mitt Romney was the governor of Massachusetts and a very successful businessman. John McCainis a long-serving senator and war hero. George W. Bush was twice elected governor of Texas;Bob Dole had been Senate majority leader;George H.W. Bush had been just about everything; and Ronald Reagan was governor of California for two terms.

Obviously, experience does not in itself predict a successful presidency — one can hardly do worse than the younger Bush — but inexperience all but guarantees trouble. Barack Obama’s missteps in both foreign and domestic policy — the Obamacare rollout debacle and the Syrian fiasco — were undoubtedly a consequence of inexperience. Especially in foreign policy, where decisions can be made instantly and without advance congressional approval, experience matters greatly.

My doubts about Paul, while based somewhat on his bizarre positions, are really grounded in a fear of the amateur. I expressed similar reservations about Elizabeth Warren, who seemingly moments after being elected a senator from Massachusetts was being mentioned by fellow left-wing Democrats as a presidential candidate. Warren had the good sense to take herself out of contention.

The plight of the Republican Party is now — so to speak — playing on Broadway. I am speaking of the late Lorraine Hansberry’s still-powerful “A Raisin in the Sun,” this time around with Denzel Washington heading up a remarkable cast. What you need to know is that Hansberry was raised in a Republican household. That was once hardly remarkable — many African Americans owed allegiance to the party of Abraham Lincoln. Franklin D. Roosevelt wooed them, and over time Republicans abandoned them. The GOP became hostile to civil rights.

Hansberry, who drifted toward radicalism, was also active in the lesbian movement. The Republican Party has done for homosexual rights what it did to civil rights. It has become the voice of recalcitrance, smoothly transitioning from opposing one form of civil rights to another. I will spare you the cliche about being on the wrong side of history, but you get the idea. Throw in anti-immigrant sentiment, opposition to increasing the minimum wage, seeming resistance to all things feminist — and you have a political party with very little to say to moderates. The GOP always sounds like a crank.

Little wonder then that its presidential candidates range from the callow to the comedic. (I exempt Paul Ryan and Jeb Bush from this group.) Rand Paul is in the former category — a gaggle of ideas untethered to practicality or practical experience. He remains a voice in the wilderness. He should stay there.

Jeb Bush to change his last name before he runs for President

News of the World by Panama Jack in Exile in Costa Rica

April 13, 2014  Costa Rican Time

Jeb Bush has decided to change his last name  to get rid of the Bush Kiss of Death last name.

another-bush-in-the-white-house

Realizing that the Bush name represents three wars and two depressions.

41gb_header_sm

Bush One AKA George Herbert Walker Bush started a war in Iraq that cost the country 100 billion dollars and left the presidency with the country in a depression.

38497_140302542658286_3158467_n

Bush Two AKA George Walker Bush AKA Dumb Ass Mother Fucker, started Two Wars that we are still fighting and loosing Today at a cost of 16 Trillion Dollars and rising. Left the presidency with the country in the worst depression the world has ever seen or known. The United States is still trying to recover from this depression, but will never recover from a George W. Bush Depression ever. Except if you live in Texas where all the stolen money ended up.

Jeb Bush is looking to change his name one of the below.

971389_643063689054418_351013104_n

Kennedy, a good name associated with the Peace Corp, Not going to war in Vietnam, not invading Cuba and being loved by the American People. But the name will not work for him, because his father George Herbert Walker Bush Shot and Killed John F. Kennedy in Dallas Texas, while he was working for the C.I.A. So count out the name Kennedy.

John Kennedy Assassination and who killed him

Clinton, A Good name associated with a bumming economy a prosperous economy, Great Sex along the lines of John Kennedy but not with Marilyn Monroe, but he did pull off having Great Sex and Cuban Cigars in the White House and it was not with Hillary. The problem with this is there is already a Clinton running fro President in 2016. This would look like to the American Voters a Clinton Come Lately or an other Hillary look a like.

Nixon, George H.W. Bush and Gerald Ford George is still alive and he needs to be hung for shooting Kennedy

Nixon, George H.W. Bush and Gerald Ford George is still alive and he needs to be hung for shooting Kennedy

Nixon, no not Nixon for this name will not fly in any election.  Most associated with the name Tricky Dick who orchestrated the John F. Kennedy assassination and was the only President of the United States to resign before being impeached and convicted for crimes against the Nation. Creator of the C.I.A. and pardoned by President Gerald Ford also the lead investigator in the John F. Kennedy assassination.

Washington, associated with being the first president of the United States of America and American Independence from England and being a great general who never lost a war unlike any Bush so far. No not Washington that will not work for Jeb Bush because George Washington owned slave and had sex with his House N Words and even fathered children with them.

Lincoln,  AKA Honest Abe.  Most associated with freeing African Americans from Slavery. being a Republican like Jeb Bush is his best choice. He can run on a platform of saving money, things like chiseling of the beard at the Lincoln Memorial, so that it looks like him.

lincoln-memorial-address

Personally I think the Bush Dynasty is over except for the hanging of George H.W. Bush for killing Kennedy and the Hanging of George W. for bankrupting the American economy for the personal gain of himself and his close friends.

WE ARE GONNA VOTE FOR HIM ANYWAY NO MATTER WHAT HIS NAME IS BUSH, YOU KNOW I ONCE HAD ME A BUSH OFF OF A YOUNG GIRL, I THOUGHT I WAS HER FIRST ONE, BUT HER FATHER GOT THERE FIRST

I gona Vote for Mitt Romney

The Christian Political Right, If they are not trying to have sex with and underage girl, they are haveing sex with their best friends wife or Sucking Cock in the Men’s Room the story of Republican Vance McAllister

MONROE, La. (AP) and News of the World by Panama Jack in exile in Costa Rica — In a matter of days, Republican Vance McAllister has gone from being the unlikely congressman — a special election winner who trounced his party’s establishment candidate — to the “kissing congressman,” a faith-and-family politician caught on video embracing an aide married to one of his friends.

sucking cock in the men's room

Amid some calls for his resignation, he has said he will respect the verdict of his constituents this fall. Residents interviewed here by The Associated Press expressed disappointment, but not surprise.

Noting the histories of President Bill Clinton and former Louisiana governor and current congressional candidate Edwin Edwards and sitting Sen. David Vitter, voters say they’re accustomed to tawdry politician scandals. Many are as eager to speculate how a local newspaper got video of McAllister kissing Melissa Peacock as they are to opine on the dalliance itself. And they’re sure there’s more than enough hypocrisy and political intrigue to go around.

McAllister’s “main thing now is to get straight with his family,” said Jackie Coleman, a retired law enforcement officer from Olla, south of Monroe. “Then,” Coleman said, “this should be over.”

There’s been little subtlety in the response from Republican powers.

Gov. Bobby Jindal called for his resignation; so did the state Republican chairman, who said McAllister had become an “embarrassment.” House Speaker John Boehner said the freshman congressman has “decisions that he has to make.” The closest thing to support McAllister has found among his colleagues are statements of concern for his wife and five children.

9b72c1de660d25993a78db88fad45aee

Many voters seem more inclined to forgiveness in this conservative district that comprises northeast Louisiana.

Wearing a T-shirt from her Baptist church in the community of Start, Pamela Nolan made it clear she abhors marital infidelity of any kind. But, the hospital pharmacist added, “what laws has he broken? What trust has he violated, other than his wife’s? … The next election should be the determinant of how we feel about it.”

McAllister hasn’t appeared publicly since the weekly Ouachita Citizen posted online a grainy security tape showing McAllister and Peacock kissing in the congressman’s district headquarters. His Washington-based spokesman said that Peacock has since resigned voluntarily but that her former boss has no plans to follow suit.

A wealthy businessman without prior political experience, McAllister won a special election last fall to succeed Rodney Alexander, who resigned to take a spot in Jindal’s Cabinet. McAllister spent his own money and got a boost from endorsements by his most famous constituents, the bearded Robertson men of the cable television hit “Duck Dynasty.” He scored a runoff spot against Neil Riser, a state senator and Jindal ally with backing from GOP brokers.

While McAllister sought support from social conservatives — the Robertsons are outspoken Christians and McAllister appeared in ads with his family, promising to “defend our Christian way of life” — he defied Republican orthodoxy by calling for Medicaid expansion under President Barack Obama’s health care law. That won him the endorsement and runoff campaign muscle of Monroe Mayor Jamie Mayo, a Democrat who finished third in the initial open primary. McAllister routed Riser on Election Day.

Yet coming into office an outsider, McAllister turned to the establishment that he’d beaten. He took over the lease for Alexander’s Monroe office, where the security tape was taken, and he retained top leaders from Alexander’s staff. One of those aides, McAllister’s district director, Leah Gordon, has figured prominently in speculation about how the tapes were leaked to the newspaper.

Voters say they’re wise to all of those variables.

Terry Parker, who owns a painting company in Start, said he voted for McAllister because of his emphasis on biblical morals. “He did this to himself,” Parker said. “But it’s dirty, dirty politics being done to him, too.”

The congressman’s office floated the idea of an FBI investigation into the leaked tape, but then backed off. Bill Land, an architect who owns and shares the building with McAllister’s office, said just two people had access to digital security archives: one of his staff members and Gordon, McAllister’s district director.

Land’s employee, Lance Hilton, told the AP that he’s never accessed old footage. But he said Gordon reviewed tape on multiple occasions, including when she served as Alexander’s district director. Hilton said she usually told him she suspected theft by an employee.

Gordon declined an interview through another McAllister aide.

For his part, Land said he supported Riser last year but now considers McAllister “a friend,” enough so that he contributed the maximum $2,600 toward his re-election.

Mayo offered similar sentiments and a cautionary tale to any politician campaigning on personal uprightness: “It’s a dangerous platform to run on for anyone. We all live in glass houses of some variety.” Indeed, Heath Peacock, the husband of the woman in the video, told CNN that McAllister is “about the most nonreligious person I know” and “broke out the religious card” only for votes.

Republicans Claim that only the Rich Should be able to Vote

Obama: Right to vote under threat in the US Associated Press By JIM KUHNHENN and News of the World by Panama Jack in exile in Costa Rica I know where my birth certificate is, but a lot of people don’t 971389_643063689054418_351013104_n NEW YORK (AP) — In an unsparing critique of Republicans, President Barack Obama on Friday accused the GOP of using voting restrictions to keep voters from the polls and of jeopardizing 50 years of expanded ballot box access for millions of black Americans and other minorities. Obama to warn against Voting Rights Act erosion Associated Press Obama To Focus Civil Rights Message On Voting CBS Dallas Fort Worth (RSS) Obama lashes out at Republican efforts to restrict voting Reuters Clinton: New voter restrictions are a step back Associated Press Clinton criticizes new voter restrictions Associated Press “The stark, simple truth is this: The right to vote is threatened today in a way that it has not been since the Voting Rights Act became law nearly five decades ago,” Obama said in a fiery speech at civil rights activist and television talk host Al Sharpton’s National Action Network conference. 0 Obama waded into the acrid debate over voting access in an election year where control of the Senate, now in the hands of Democrats, is at stake, as is Obama’s already limited ability to push his agenda through Congress. Republicans say the voting measures guard against voter fraud, but Democrats say they erode the landmark 1965 law that helped pave Obama’s path in politics. “Across the country, Republicans have led efforts to pass laws making it harder, not easier, for people to vote,” he said, relating anecdotes of voters turned away because they didn’t have the right identification or because they needed a passport or birth certificate to register. “About 60 percent of Americans don’t have a passport,” he said. “Just because you can’t have the money to travel abroad doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be able to vote here at home.” Obama’s speech to a crowd of about 1,600 in a New York hotel ballroom came a day after he marked the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act at the LBJ Library in Austin, Texas, where he praised President Lyndon Johnson’s understanding of presidential power and its use to create new opportunities for millions of Americans. 6225eedf10a74f092c0f6a7067000e91 The president pinned efforts to curb access to the ballot box directly on the GOP, declaring that the effort “has not been led by both parties. It’s been led by the Republican Party.” Mocking the Republicans, he said, “What kind of political platform is that? Why would you make that a part of your agenda, preventing people from voting?” Republicans have argued that they voter laws seek to safeguard the voting process and are not an attempt to limit Democratic turnout. A spokeswoman for Republican Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, a state whose voting laws are being challenged by the Obama administration, said the Supreme Court has ruled that voter identification laws are constitutional. “Protecting the integrity of the voting process is something that benefits everyone, partisan politics do not,” the spokeswoman, Megan Mitchell, said. For Democrats this year, no political issue stands out more prominently than their ability to motivate voters to turn out at the polls in November. But traditionally weak midterm turnout by Democrats coupled with efforts in some states to limit early voting and to enact voter identification requirements have prompted the president and his party to raise alarms and step up their get-out-the-vote efforts. “I want to be clear: I am not against reasonable attempts to secure the ballot. We understand that. There has to be rules in place,” Obama said. “But I am against requiring an ID that millions of Americans don’t have.” 38497_140302542658286_3158467_n Just last year, seven states passed voter restrictions, ranging from reductions in early voting periods to identification requirements, according to the Brennan Center for Justice at New York University School of Law. North Carolina alone adopted a photo ID requirement, eliminated registrations on Election Day and reduced the number of early voting days. The North Carolina steps, which take effect in the 2016 election, came after the Supreme Court last June threw out the crucial section of the Voting Rights Act that required that all or parts of 15 states with a history of discrimination in voting, mainly in the South, get federal approval before changing their election laws. 945402_579433395411863_618575519_n Bipartisan legislation proposed in the House and Senate would attempt to address the constitutional concerns raised by the Supreme Court. But sponsors such as Sen. Pat Leahy, D-Vt., and Rep. James Sensenbrenner, R-Wis., are still trying to line up enough support for the proposals. The fiftieth anniversary of the Civil Rights Act has brought renewed attention to issues of race and the accomplishments of the civil rights movement. dick_cheney A CBS News poll released Wednesday found that more than 3 in 4 Americans say there has been progress in getting rid of racial discrimination. But those views split racially, with whites much more likely than African-Americans to think real progress has been achieved. Follow Jim Kuhnhenn on Twitter at http://twitter.com/jkuhnhenn

PANAMA CITY NIGHTLIFE

PANAMA CITY NIGHTLIFE

PLACES TO EAT

Close by are a number of budget cafes and restaurants and some very high end stuff. On Via España there are at least 3 cafeteria style places. Café Reina isn?isn’t bad. Across Via Espana is the Farmacias Arrocha, turn left here and you’ll find a  Chinese place on the left hand side about halfway down the street. Look for the black windows. The food is good, its cheap and there is A LOT of it. Just before the Chinese place is a fast food fried chicken place called Pio Pio. Keep going down the street and on the next corner across the road you’ll find a local place with Panamanian food.

nightlife-panama

Beers are cheap and the food is good. On Via Espana Mcdonalds.
A bit further afield you’ll find plenty of western (more expensive) places. Via Argentina is about a 20 minute walk (left on Via Espana), or a short taxi ride away.

Panama New York Bagel

Some good choices there are The Green House, Manolos, El Trapiche and the New York Bagel Café across the street from the world famous Einstein Head . The bagel café is great for breakfast and lunch. Theres lots of other options, you just need to get there and walk

Alberto-Einstein-Panama
Via Veneto (Via Espana, turn left 15 minute walk) has the Veneto Hotel and Casino which can fun for eating at and watching the hookers in action. If you walk around this area you’ll find a lot of places. Beirut, close to the Marriott hotel, is a popular place for middle eastern food.

Panama City Nightlife
Calle Uruguay is popular for going out and for eating and the best place to hang out with wealthy Panamanians. Its about a 25 minute walk away (left on Via Espana, go past the Shell gas station down th street from Hoters. Just past the gas station you’ll see traffic lights, take the next turn to the right after the traffic lights.. Down the hill, across the big street, keep going up the hill, then down the other side. You’ll see Hooters and turn right. The whole area is called Calle Uruguay, dont miss some of the places on the side streets. Try Habibis, upstairs at La Bodaguita and Sahara. Athens, at the start of the street opposite Hooters, is a great option for good, cheap greek food.

hooters-panama-city
The Causeway is another place with lots of options. Youll need a taxi at night time ($5-6) but its probably worth it. Theres great views over the sea and back to the city. At the end of the causeway near the Marina is Cayukos. Its cheap, popular and has good food and beer. Its also one of the few good outdoor eating options, certainly the only one on the water. Facing the Marina its on the left near the slipway for the boats.

The Causeway Panama City

VEGETARIAN Food:
There is an expensive vegetarian restaurant on Via Argentina and a cheap on. And a hindu restaurant, somewhere around Calle 50. Also the Rastafarian cafe on a side street of Via Veneto.
You can buy veggie food in the Riva Smith supermarket (and falafels in the kosher supermarket).
Kosher Super Market: There is a kosher super market in Punta Paitilla in the Multicentro Shopping Mall, and another one actually in Multicentro.

GOING OUT

But if you really want some Great Food in Panama City hunt own Matio and eat there, you will be amazed.

Panama has a huge selection of bars, clubs and other options for filling in your night. Close by are a couple of decent local options (very local??). Across Via Espana is the Farmacias Arrocha, turn left here and about halfway down on the left hand side of the road is BAR 37.

Beers are cheap and they have ok music and a dance floor. Keep going down the street and turn to the right, on the next corner on the left side of the road is El Maison de Perez. Its on the first floor.

This is a good place for local salsa and draws a good crowd. Again, beers are cheap and often they have 2 for 1 mixed drinks. These are a good option for a local night out, but its probably wise to be aware of who youre talking to in here. Violence is rare in Panama, but these places can attract a shadier type of clientele. Dont let that put you off going though, why would you come to Panama if you just wanted to hangout in places like back home????
Calle Uruguay has some of the best options of clubs and bars. This is where you go to see and be seen. And youll pay for it. Most clubs have an entrance fee of $10-15 and beers cost $2-3. It can be cheaper if you go before 11pm, especially for the girls. Guys, if some hot girl is talking to you, its probably not because she likes your good looks, if you know what I mean??. Saharas is a good option for live rock music and a good crowd, they have an undercover outdoor area at the front as well. Entrance is $5 including a free drink. The more popular clubs are Guru, Kos, Seis, Moods and People. None of them are cheap. Below Seis is a flashy bar with no cover charge called Privey, above Moods (in front of Sahara) is a good bar with no cover charge. Bombaleo often has salsa. La Bodeguita has good music, but this is where you REALLY need to watch those hot girls talking to you. The Londoner is an OK, but expensive, pub.
Close to Calle Uruguay is Extreme Planet. Its got Bennigans which is a popular place with locals for drinking and eating. Not cheap, but they often have special offers which makes it OK. In the same building, on the 10th floor is Sky Bowling. As the name suggests it has a bowling alley, but theres also a bar and restaurant. If you want to get a good view of the Panamanian skyline at night then this is the place to come. One wall has huge windows. Theres also a cinema in the same complex.

Via Argentina has a few options but not the same nightlife of Calle Uruguay. Taberna 21 is a local pub, El Pavo Real is an English pub with pool tables and live music. The Rockin Gorilla (or Rocky Gorilla as the locals say) is pretty big, with pool tables and live music. It gets a good university student type of crowd. Youll know youre there when you see the huge Gorilla with a guitar on the roof.

Via Veneto has mainly the casinos, but these are good places to start drinking. They generally have live music and cheap drinks as well. Just down from the Veneto casino, down some steps, is a decent place with some outdoor tables. Just down from the Hotel Continental, near the Marriott Hotel is La Terraza.

This is a good option most nights of the week for a few beers. It has a good layout, gets a good crowd and has pool tables. Across from the El Rey supermarket, down some stairs is a good late night place.
The Causeway is good for somewhere different. There are lots of different places here, some good, some not. Youll have to get there and figure it out. Bamboo is often good, and close by are some other places that do OK. In the Flamenco center are a few bars, but they are very hit and miss, some nights good, others not.
In Amador, near the start of the Causeway, theyre in the process of building an entertainment area. The plan is to have a walled in street full of bars and clubs. Its open but hasnt really taken off yet. Its called ZONA VIVA.
Casco Viejo is an up and coming bar area. This area has never been popular with Panamanians for going out as its too far away and regarded as dangerous. There?s also not many taxis at night time. But it?s starting to change and more bars are opening up over there. One of the first was La Casona. Its in a huge old warehouse and doubles as an art gallery. This Panamas answer to alternative. They often have Salsa and live music. Its very hit and miss though, one night is great and the next dead. Its on Plaza Herrera right next to the no go section of Panama City. Youll have to go and explore Casco Viejo yourself to find the other good places. Thats part of the adventure!
Sundays and Mondays in Panama City are dead. Casinos like the Veneto and the Fiesta are good options, especially the Fiesta. The best place though is Foxies (on a Monday). Another very local place but youll have a great time. They have Karaoke until about 12am and then move to a show. This can range from jelly wrestling to a comedian to a male/female strip show. No matter what it is, its a lot of fun. This place always gets a good crowd. For your average Panamanian, this is the only place to go on Mondays. Your average upper class Panamanian would not be seen dead here. Thats got to be one good reason for going!!!

Why Panama

Panama is safe:
While you still need to remember that you’re in a Latin American city and take care accordingly, Panama City is not known for crimes against tourist. Petty theft does happen but is in no way as common as in more popular destinations such as Costa Rica. You won’t be scared to walk the streets here even at night.

Panama is Tourist friendly and uses the American Dollar for it’s currency.
Even after “hosting” the American military for so long, tourism is relatively new here in Panama. Panamanians are warm and welcoming and always happy to help. Customer service levels can leave something to be desired in shops and restaurants, but if you were working for $300 a month you wouldn’t be happy either!! Don’t expect too much english to be spoken but there are plenty of buses and it’s easy to travel here.

Panama is world class for adventure:
Canopy, trekking, rappelling, sea kayaking, kitesurfing, windsurfing and surfing are world-class experiences for the hard and soft adventure seeker. International experts rave about river running in Panama, including rafting and kayaking. There are rivers where you can ride 20 sets of rapids in one afternoon.

Panama is the best place for ecotourism:
Panama has the most accessible pristine rainforests in the world. As a narrow land bridge connecting two continents it has some of the world’s most biodiverse rainforests. National parks cover five million acres. And a key indicator of its bio-diversity is that Panama has 1,000 recorded bird species-more than the US and Canada combined.

What Are The Most Common Jobs for Panama Expats?

What Are The Most Common Jobs for Panama Expats?

By liz larroquette

We hadn’t even been served our appetizers by the ti me they asked. “They” were a young Canadian couple- early 30’s and freshly hitched. We had just spent the day touring properties, several of which they found all too easy to picture themselves in. Now, as we sat down for a well-deserved lunch at the Coronado Country Club, I could see their minds buzzing. Could they really move here? Could they make it work? What would they, could they, do for a living? Ever since Panama started making headlines as the hottest economy in the Americas, I’ve seen my client pool slowly shift from retirees and second homeowners to entrepreneurs and executives. In Panama, the opportunity for advancement is extreme- and irresistible for those smart enough to recognize it. Still, it can be daunting to jump headfirst into an unfamiliar workforce- even one as inviting as Panama’s. I’ve compiled list to help you get an idea of what your possibilities may be.

English Teacher

Panamanian schools consider English courses as indispensable as math or science. Anybody in (or trying to get into) a well-paid position is expected to have at least basic English skills, if not total fluency. As Panama’s economy has continued to globalize, even adults are now seeking language classes. As a result, there’s a huge demand for English teachers in Panama. I was as surprised as you will probably be to hear that you needn’t be fluent in Spanish in order to teach English. For many schools, being able to communicate in basic Spanish is enough- especially those teaching higher levels of English, wherein it’s the only language allowed in the classroom. While it’s not likely you’ll get rich teaching English, it’s a great option for those looking to get their foot into Panama’s door. Plus, considering the cost of living in Panama- even a salary on the lower end of the spectrum will allow you to live quite comfortably.

Freelancer

If you work in a creative field such as writing, graphic design, web development, or photography, you could make a small fortune as a freelancer. According to the “creatives” I work with, freelancing in Panama is more plausible than in North America. There is less competition, as you’re not going to find as many creative professionals as are bred in American and Canadian universities. And since the economy is thriving, there’s more demand for creative industries- especially those that help to grow a business.

Start a Business

Many of the most successful businesses in Panama have been started by expats. Several that I know of were started almost unintentionally- by freelancers whose clientele grew exponentially, or restaurant owners who just wanted “a new place to hang out.” Panama makes it easy for expats to start their own businesses. Thanks to its Foreign Investment Protection law, foreigners enjoy the same investment rights as nationals do. And since North America developed earlier than Panama did, we’re often able to visualize opportunities or approach solutions in ways that Panamanians would be less likely to do.

Landlords (and ladies) and Property Managers

Panama’s real estate market is thriving, and so is short and long term tourism. Many expats in Panama make a great living by purchasing properties and putting them up for rent. What’s unique about Panama’s rental market is that it’s made up of many different “types” of tenants, and all of them are in abundance. There are the countless tourists visiting Panama every year, looking to enjoy its perfect weather and many attractions. There are those considering moving to Panama, but want to try before they buy. Finally, there’s the entrepreneurial crowd that work in Panama but aren’t yet ready to purchase. The landlords and property managers I know love what they do. Often, their “jobs” amount to socializing, as tenants become friends over a round of margaritas at sunset. This is especially true for those owning properties that were designed to be easy rental units- such as these unique beachfront condos at Royal Palm.

Corporate Jobs

Expats also have the ability to scout out a position within a Panamanian or international corporation. With so many businesses expanding under the red-hot economy of the last decade, many of them are forced to reach overseas to bolster their workforce. This is especially true when considering that Panama is home to a smaller breadth of specialties than exists in North America. While Panamanian universities tend to produce traditional professions such as medicine and law, some of the more modern fields remain understudied. This is where expats have an advantage. There is some red tape for expats working within corporations. Panamanian corporations must have a certain number of nationals employed for every foreigner they bring on board. International companies (i.e those which originated elsewhere but have bases in Panama) have a bit more wiggle room, though again it depends on the size and type of company. Corporate positions are most often found through networking or through Google searches around the term “jobs for expats/foreigners in Panama”  or “__(enter field type here)___ jobs in Panama.”

Alex Campos from SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION.

On the first day, July 16th 2010, after a visit to the Panama Canal and the Naos Island Laboratories, a Plenary Conference given by Alex Campos took place at the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute Facilities in the city of Panama. We talked about all Telemetry technologies, their advantages and disadvantages, and a technical explanation of each one of them.
Second day was only for traveling to the Island, which took us around 10 hours by bus and boat. The island of Cobia is located on the Pacific Ocean, it held a prison from 1919 to 2004, which allowed it to conserve a pristine condition as it was avoided by locals, and other than the prison, was completely undeveloped. After the prison closed down it was converted into a Reserve. It is one of the last places in Central America where the Scarlet Macaw can be found in large numbers in the wild and it is identified by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Our first stop was a station of the Reserve with all facilities.

Tito is a “friendly” crocodile who is usually found resting on the sand, very close to the station.
On the 18th we had full day telemetry training. Given the quantity of participants we had to split the group in 3. Transmitters where hidden so they could not be easily located, basically the student had to be at a distance of about 1 meter to be able to see it. The students received a theoretical explanation and then we went to the shore to locate 2 transmitters with the help and lead of Alex. There was a third transmitter which the students had to locate completely on their own.
While tracking is fairly simple, if it is not made properly it can lead to huge errors which can mean the entire difference between a complete success or a complete failure during a telemetry research (e.g. the most common mistake causes a very important loss of detection distance). The training is designed with this in mind in order to avoid overconfidence from the participants. So it was no surprise (and even expected) that the first 2 transmitters were easily found by the students, but for the 3rd one without the help of the telemetry expert, caused them to be completely unable to find the transmitter for about an hour. The reason was overconfidence, and once they understood what they were doing wrong they were able to find the transmitter in a few minutes. Same thing happened with all 3 groups.
On the 19th we moved by boat away from the last facilities and set camp somewhere in the middle of the island, by the beach and facing East. While rustic, the camping site was very comfortable; we had 2 cooks who prepared wonderful meals, a small natural waterfall with pristine fresh water, and a family of Scarlet macaws nesting on a palm tree nearby. The only problem was the mosquitoes which drove all of us crazy as they are so small that were able to find their way between the hair and bite the skull, and mosquito nets from the tents were useless as they could cross between the tiny holes.

Crocodile trapping began that same night, as tides increase water level around 1 meter we had to wait for the low tides and had approximately 6 hours to work.
We walked along the shore with lamps which we only turned on every once in a while and for just a few seconds. This is to spot Crocodile’s eyes as they reflect our lights. At first, I honestly got very scared, as we walked into a small river where we could not see a thing, the water got up to our bellies, and we were walking among the mangrove. Silence and darkness is amazing, but my fear was to step on a crocodile and get attacked.
We caught several newborn crocodiles which were released immediately after handling, and 2 larger ones which were taken to the camp to attach Telenax transmitters on them the next day.
Telenax transmitters purchased for this project included TXE-317BR for individuals of more than 3 meters long, TXE-311BR for individuals between 1.5 and 3 meters, and TXE-124BR for the smaller ones.
On the fifth day, July 20th, Miryam led the procedure to attach the transmitters. A stainless steel wire is passed under the skin and osteoderms, right on the nape; antenna facing forward and cut right before reaching the eyes. We installed one TXE-311BR and one TXE-124BR model that day.

More trapping session took place that night, but we were not very lucky as we only found smaller individuals; which was expected as larger ones tend to move out of the area after the first day of human presence. We walked farther away and even got trapped by the high tide but were not nearly as lucky as the first day.
A large crocodile was spotted around 10 meters into the ocean, as the area is very flat, 2 of the researchers tried to approach to it, but walking in the ocean, getting close to a 3 meters long crocodile is not a safe idea. They managed to calculate the size when it looked at them with both eyes, as the distance between them gives a good calculation of the crocodile´s size.
On the sixth day the individuals with transmitters were released where they were found. We spent most of the day tracking them to gain more experience.

That night we went out again, and a group of the most experienced researchers took the boat and managed to catch the large crocodile which was spotted the night before.
Very early in the next morning we attached a TXE-317BR unit on two larger specimens, the largest one and 3 more which were caught in the ocean were released by boat at night. We tracked them for a while and went back to camp.

Finally, on day 7, July 23rd we were picked up by boat, visited the old prison and went back to the continent on a Panama’s Army boat.
All individuals fitted with a tracking transmitter during these days and future trips to the island are being constantly tracked, as this workshop was the starting point of a long-term crocodile tracking project in the island.
It was a pleasure and an honor to be able to share my knowledge and experience with you. I want to specially thank Miryam Venegas, Ph.D., the Smithsonian Institute, and Panama´s Army for allowing me to have this incredible adventure. Thank you also to all of the students who were very nice and keen to learn.
